About the event
- Project: GenomesDAO
- Guests: Aldo de Pape and GenomesDAO Intern
- Topic: A new paradigm in genomic data management - putting you in control of your data.
- NOT FINANCIAL ADVICE
About our guest speaker
- Include guest name(s); try to include name pronunciation.
- Aldo de Pape (co founder and CEO)
- GenomesDAO Intern
- Write a short bio about the guest(s) including their role at the project they are speaking about.
- Aldo has venture building experience from previously founding a technology companty.
- Intern works as an intern at GenomesDAO
- Find one or two things that are unique or interesting about our guest. Little known facts are great! i.e. owns two Shiba Inus in real life so bought a lot of SHIB.
- Describe their crypto journey thus far. i.e. graduated from college in 2016, got their first bitcoin as a graduation gift, fell down the rabbithole of Ethereum, launched a DeFi protocol in 2020.
- 2005 Utrecht University (History of International Relations)
- 2006 Vlerick Leuven Gent School of Management (General Management)
- 2006-07 PCM Media (Digital Product Manager)
- 2007-09 Springer Science and Business Media (International STM Trainee)
- 2009-11 Springer Science+Business Media (Manager Publishing Operations)
- 2011-14 Macmillan Publishers Ltd./ Digital Science (Business Development Manager)
- 2014-current TeachPitch (Founder and CEO)
- genomes medium talks about the founders meeting up in a pub to talk about their ideas on vaulting genomic data but it was also put to the wayside because the technological difficulties were greater than the enthusiasm to undertake the project. until their would be competitors started participating in a health data grab. these same competitors known for their tech gadget company that allows your family tree to be mapped, capitulating to a healthcare company is super bad for end users both in terms of privacy and the value of information.
- How has their crypto journey impacted their decision to join/launch the project they work on today?
- the value of genetic data has been up only for quite a while. big companies were able to capitalize on this and were subsequently sold off to even bigger companies. these companies and databases became the target of hacks and big pharma deals. after witnessing this corruption of power, the team decided the time to start GenomesDAO couldn't get any better.
- What are some notable achievements that increase their web3 reputation?
- founder of TeachPitch (a platform that resolves the problem of information abundance for teachers & schools through the process of curation, online tutoring and artificial intelligence)
About the project
- What is the general positioning of the project? i.e. DeFi, NFTs, DAOs, governance.
- This project is centered around Defi and DAOS and biomedical information
- What is the value proposition of the project? How does it clearly differentiate itself from others in the web3 space?
- value proposition is to take the power of your dna back into your own hands
- How does it benefit it community members and general web3 communities at large?
- people are able to be paid for their information about their dna
- companies are able to pay for subsets of information
- public goods research can be funded for free through community involvement
- Is it bridging blockchains, protocols, tools, communities, etc.?
- bridging defi and daos with human rights, healthcare, big pharma, and dna science research
- Does it bring a unique vision or approach to solve challenges in web3?
- yes there is not much if any competition in this space in web3. the only competition are the web2 companies this product is meant to disrupt.
- competing web2 companies were recently aquired by another company. this highlights the dangers of centralizing this information as end users are none the wiser when their personally identifyabale information changes hands.
- competing web2 comanies are also known to have handed over sensitive dna information to the FBI in the last year, this highlights the positives and necessities of forming this project into a dao. the decentralization allows to prevent authoritarian entities unwarranted access to private information.
- How does it improve the web3 ecosystem?
- current systems take advantage of people and the information they provide when they sign away the rights to their genome. this protocol puts the power of information back into the hands of the people.
- in the old system, you send in your dna and the company gets rights to sell any of the information they are able to about your dna.
- the new method with genomesdao allows for users to maintain their privacy while still providing their information to pharmaceutical companies for compensation.
- public goods research and not for profit companies looking to better the whole of mankind through their research will be able to request information from people about their genome for free. this allows for the project to give back to the community in hopes that this research could lead to new advancements in science and technology. furthering everyone as a whole.
- Generally, how does the product work?
- Provide basic information about the product
- using block chain technology to maintain sole ownership of your genome and the personally identifiable information contained within. the ability to pick and choose which research studies or pharmaceutical inquiries that you have the choice of opting in to in exchange for the $gene token.
- pharmaceutical companies and research studies must spend $gene in order to query the database of sequenced genomes.
- Details of product stemming off high level overview
- you pay to have your entire genome sequenced which is stored in a vault only accessible with your private keys.
- you can use the information in your genome in exchange for the token $gene
- you can stake your $gene token in exchange for the dao governance token $gnome
- $gene is the money of the project that people are paid in and that companies will use to pay with. $gnome is governance token used to vote for decisions. 100 $gnome is required for active membership of GenomesDAO
- Outline a few mid to high-level topics about the product
- the ability for you to use your genome in order to identify your specific tolerances to a specific drug. this would allow for more accurate dosages of medicine, whether your body has a higher tolerance and needs more of a drug or you have a lower tolerance and need less.
- showing if you have a history or predisposition for any hereditary diseases. using this with your significant other would allow you to know the chances of your kids also having these diseases.
- these processes are done in a way that preserves privacy as much as possible in that the requesters of information in genomes are only given precisely what they have asked and not a blanket full access to sensitive private information. this allows users to pick and choose which information they decide to share.
- Results of the product so far
- Practical applications of product.
- Detail current functionality of project, where it is deployed, TVL.
- currently able to have your genome sequenced, view family tree, review predisposition to ailments, and sign transactions to allow companies to query your genome in exchange for #gene
- Current and potential use cases.
- potential to migrate to l2 for scaling
- Outline steps for a beginner to get started.
- sign up for an account today and get your genome sequenced.
- Token economy.
- $gene token is used for payments by companies to end users for their genetic information. end users can stake their $gene tokens for $gnome tokens. some $gene tokens are burned during the process
- 1 billion max $gene supply
- 10 million max $gnome supply
-
Any recent, meaningful updates to the project.
